“When groceries, food and medicine are available on demand, why not gyms?” asked Srikanth Balakumar. Based on the `pay as you go’ concept, Balakumar and Kushal Kumar launched Gymer in June 2015. Available through a mobile app and website, Gymer provides a cashless system for users to view gyms closest to their location and book hourly sessions. From small gyms charging `60-70 per hour to high end centres, users can book up to 12 slots .

Startups operating on these lines are making it easier for people to discover and enroll into membership programs to get fit. Many people sign up for gym memberships to help themselves stay fit. But, with high membership fees, many are apprehensive about paying up, not knowing whether they will be able to use the gym regularly. On the other hand, many gyms face the problem of a low signup ratio and a high drop-out rate.
Market research revealed that 60-70 per cent of those who pay a gym membership fee (anywhere between Rs 15,000 and 25,000 per year) hardly turned up to use the facilities. Only eight per cent of the population went to the gym at least 20 days a month. And 20 per cent would attend 10- 20 days a month.
